Common Sources of Contamination With Moonshining

Toxic hazard flagMoonshining is a methodical process that takes practice, dedication and hard to work to master. As long as you follow the instructions accordingly, you shouldn’t have a problem brewing a batch of drinkable moonshine; however, creating the balance between strength and flavor is something that comes with experience. Whether this is your first batch of hundredth, though, you always need to be aware of potential contaminants in your shine. Allowing even small amounts of contaminants to enter your shine could ruin an otherwise perfect bath. Here, we’re going to reveal some of the most common sources of contamination with moonshining.

Improper Condenser

One of the most common sources of contamination with moonshining is from an improper condenser. There have been numerous cases of people using automobile radiators as condensers in their still. The problem in doing so is that trace amounts of antifreeze will transfer over to your moonshine, essentially tainting it with chemicals like glycol. Chemicals such as this can prove to be extremely dangerous and possibly even life-threatening when consumed. The bottom line is that you need to use a clean copper equipment for your still and not automotive parts.

First Batch Rule

Due to the potentially harmful amounts of methanol present, you should always toss out your first batch of moonshine. The first batch collects a greater amount of chemicals and trace elements from the still; therefore, it will naturally contain more methanol. I know some people avoid this rule and drink the very first batch from their still, but doing so could result in contamination. Brewing up another batch will only take a little more time, so why would you risk your health? Toss out the first batch and wait until the second batch to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Non-Copper Pipes

Of course, moonshine stills should feature all-copper pipes and tubing. Trying to save money by opting for aluminum or other cheap-grade pipes in your still will only increase the risk of contamination. Invest the money in 100% authentic copper pipes to improve the overall quality of your moonshine. It’s a small investment that will pay off with better tasting, higher quality moonshine.

After reading this post, you should have a better idea on how to reduce the chance of contamination in your moonshine. Just remember to stick with copper pipes, toss out your first batch, and avoid using automotive parts as your condenser.
